Thanks to ecommerce, companies in US are able to sell products/service to China, a country you have not yet visited, you don’t speak the language, you are not aware if the legal systems are similar, you don’t know and don’t have the resource to know if the counterpart Chinese companies are real.

So we face a question: How can I check Chinese company? How to check the legitimacy of your Chinese buyers/partners? Are they a real company.

Some facts:

China don’t have a organization like BBB(Better Business Bureau) in US, where you could check the legitimacy and background of a Chinese company.

Chinese administration of industry and commerce is the governing body that in charge of company registration. However, they don’t have a nationwide website or database system that open to public to inquiry the authentication of Chinese companies.

Sourcing China blog recently published an excellent article, sharing how to verify Chinese company without visiting their premise. Here are some tips on their blog,just for chinese authentication:

1) Do they have company bank account

Only legally incorporated companies can have business bank account. If the Chinese company insist you to pay their personal account only, be cautious.

2) Visit local AIC websites

Even though the national AIC don’t have a nationwide system allow you to check the legitimacy of Chinese company. However, some(not a lot) local AIC do allow you to use their websites to check the legitimacy of Chinese company.

3) Websites and Email

If they don’t have websites, use public email account like 163, sohu, sina, it is negative.

4) Hongkong offshore company

Be cautions doing business with Hongkong company, but operates only in mainland China. They are shell company. Read this article to learn the risk.

The Scooter I Didn’t Buy

I make no bones about the fact that I want a scooter. Scooters are just plain FUN to ride.

So I really thought I was going to buy one Saturday but it didn’t happen. Very disappointing.

I would really like an electric scooter. They’re quiet, they don’t pump out poisonous gas, and the ongoing cost of operation is just about nil. So I was really pleased when I saw on craigslist an electric scooter for sale down in Castle Rock. The guy didn’t list an asking price, saying simply that he wanted it out of his garage because he needed the space.

I contacted him and arranged to come down and check it out. I also asked what ballpark price he was looking for because, as I told him, if he didn’t want to let it go for, say, less than $1,000 I would save both of us the trouble because I’m not looking to pay anything close to that. He was a bit cagey–a good negotiator–and did not cite a number but asked me what my range was. I said $400 to $800 and he said he might be willing to come down to $800.

OK, I wasn’t excited how that played out but when I checked to see what these scoots–an EVT America R30–sold for new I saw that it was around $2,000. This one had only 500 miles on it so I figured that if I paid $800 for it that would still be a bargain, even if I could have paid even less.

I went down and checked it out and took it for a test ride. All in all it seemed like a decent little scoot, perhaps a bit inexpensively put together, but you do get what you pay for. But the test ride showed issues right from the start.

I pulled out of his driveway, which has a Hollywood curb. A Hollywood curb, in case you’re unfamiliar with the term, is when instead of putting in a curb cut for your driveway, the entire curb is sloped so you have an bit of a bump going in or out. I went over the edge of this curb and hit the street hard. Whatever front shock this thing had was clearly trash. Fine, you can replace shock absorbers.

Taking off down the street the thing showed plenty of pep. I went zooming around and–as I keep saying–it was a heck of a lot of fun. But I did some esses back and forth and made some turns and the front end was raising some concerns. It didn’t seem very stable and gave what I took to be warning of steering head issues. I had no idea what it might cost to do work on the steering head.

Back at his place, pulling back into the driveway over the Hollywood curb, it was another severe thunk of the sort that could easily send you flying if you were going very fast. I told him about the front shock and the steering. He held the front wheel steady while I pushed the handlebars left and right and there was a noticeable click and shift that they made while the wheel didn’t move. No wonder the steering felt unstable.

I was torn. I clearly was not prepared to pay $800 for something with these problems, but you don’t see many electric scooters for sale so I was asking myself if there was a price at which I would be willing to buy it even with these issues. And I told him plainly what was going on in my head. He acknowledged the issues and said he would be willing to take just $500.

Finally I concluded that no, I wouldn’t be interested in this scoot at any price. I told him it wasn’t the shock; shocks can be replaced. It was the steering. I thanked him and left.

I got home to find that he had called saying he found the problem with the steering, it was just a nut that was loose, would I like to reconsider? I was interested but figured before I answered him I would check out what it would cost to replace the front shocks. I had to do some searching but finally found a website focused on electric vehicles and a page for this particular scoot. Here I found something very interesting. In the listing of features it mentioned “rear shock absorbers” but not a word about front shocks. I also found an owner’s manual and in the diagram where it points out the different features of the product it pointed to the rear shocks but not to the front end where something that seemed to be shocks were clearly visible.

My conclusion was that although there is something up front, some sort of piston, there apparently is only the weakest possible spring and it is perhaps not something that can be replaced.

So with no actual front suspension and no way to do anything about that, I was losing interest rapidly. Then the idea that a single nut was the only thing holding the steering in place didn’t inspire confidence either. I sent him an email saying no thanks.

Very disappointing. I still want a scooter, and I’d especially like an electric one. But I guess I’m going to have to keep looking.

Reports in China: Progress or Greenwashing?

“Corporate Social Responsibility” Reports in China: Progress or Greenwashing?

Over the past decade, an increasing number of Chinese companies have begun to produce corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports. Whether that’s led to more sustainable business practices is an open question.

In 2006, State Grid was the only company in China to file a CSR report. In 2012, 1,722 Chinese companies filed CSR reports, according to a study by Syntao, a sustainability consultant. Indeed, almost a quarter of large state-owned enterprises in China filed CSR reports last year.

In theory, the purpose of CSR reports is to share information about a business’s social and environmental impact with the public. Ideally, the publication of such china credit report leads to enhanced awareness, better monitoring practices, and action to curb detrimental occurrences.

Yet while some Chinese companies have received international recognition for enhanced CSR reporting, it’s not clear the trend has translated broadly into more socially and environmentally sound policies. As Chris Marquis, an associate professor at Harvard Business School, and Yang Chen, an associate professor at Shanghai Maritime University, wrote on Dec. 5 in the online magazine Chinadialogue, “some of the same companies that were lauded for their reporting work were not necessarily following through with more responsible actions in the rest of their enterprises.”

Marquis and Yang pointed to several examples, including Baogang Group, a steel company in Inner Mongolia. The company “claims to have invested tens of millions of dollars a year in environmental protection and waste processing, and has also been recognised for its CSR and sustainability activities,” the researchers write. However, earlier this year pollution from Baogang’s facilities near the village of Dalahai was linked to “unusually high rates of cancer, along with high rates of osteoporosis and skin and respiratory diseases, and the radiation levels are ten times higher than in the surrounding countryside.” Obviously, not a sign of its commitment to principle.

At the very least, some Chinese authorities appear to have embraced the concept of corporate responsibility. In November, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences released a blue book, or official report, on the state of CSR in China, which recommended improved reporting guidelines. Currently, the Shenzhen Stock Exchange offers training on data collection and corporate reporting methods. That makes smart business sense, as unsustainable practices may prove a future liability to growth. Even smog-choked China is looking for ways to clean up.

So…you wanna buy an electric scooter eh. You’ve come to the right place. You’re immediately going to see the increase in convenience and the decrease of transportation expenses. Not to mention having tons of fun.

Follow these simple tips to get the most out of your new investment, and see you on the streets of Beijing!

1. Buy for comfort
Wether this is going to be your main mode of transportation, or just something fun to use in the weekend, you’re going to want to use it more if it’s comfortable.

Check out the various body styles and frames to see which ones suit you the best. If you’re a shorter rider, than look for the Honda Ruckus style (left) of electric scooters, or maybe the mini turtle for the female riders. This will provide a lower seat position and a lower center of gravity to help shorter riders balance during stops.

Next up is seating position. Just like a motorcycle, there are many types of seating positions and handle bar positions. Wide bars, narrow bars, drag bars, etc. Find the position and style that works for you. Usually, the various body styles come with set bars, but they can be changed so they are more comfortable for you.

Most importantly, get out there and test-fit some of these body styles. Don’t worry about power, or battery configurations yet. Just test to see how comfortable it is for you. If it’s not comfortable, you’re not going to ride it.

2. Buy for distance
How far is your commute?
Where do you go in a typical day?
How many miles do you cover before you get to a recharge point?
Are you allowed to recharge a battery at your office?

Evaluate all the above questions and figure out how much distance you’ll need to cover before a recharge.
If you go a pretty signification distance, look for Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer battery packs. They’re lighter and smaller, but more expensive.
If you need to keep costs down, double up on SLA (sealed lead acid) batteries, such as 48v, 60v or 72v, 30-40ah.
If you will recharge at work, make sure they’re removable and light, such as 2x 24v, 20ah battery packs (right), so you can bring them in one in each hand.

3. Finally, buy for power
This part is the easiest of them all. Just like car racing, power (speed) is proportional to how much money you want to put in. Same thing with China Segway.

If you have found an e-scooter style that you like and that fits you comfortably and have calculated that your commute is realistic when it comes to an e-scooter, then power is easy….buy the most power you can afford; you’ll thank yourself in 6 months’ time.

Keep in mind that these speeds are all at full charge, so you only get about 15 mins at this speed. On average expect speeds about 10% slower than the listed above for realistic daily riding.

Wind turbine manufacturer to create 106 jobs

A wind turbine manufacturer moving to Kent is to create 106 jobs.X-Wind Power, manufacturer of the world’s most advanced vertical axis wind turbines, is relocating its operations from the Isle of Wight to Discovery Park, Sandwich.Dong Energy described X-Wind as a “potentially game changing technology”.The move was assisted by Kent County Council, Locate in Kent and South Thanet MP Laura Sandys.

She said: “I’m delighted that X-Wind will shortly be based in East Kent, their innovative approach to wind energy generation is truly enlightened, demonstrating how existing roads, railways and sea defences can be used to generate significant amounts of energy.”

X-Wind Power aims to 16 people in 2013 and a further 90 within the next five years.The company is seeking engineers and technicians to become key members of the design team to develop and bring to market the next generation of wind turbines.Apprenticeships are also on offer for candidates with the right attitude and motivation.

“Kent offers X-Wind highly talented people living close to our future base at Discovery Park,” said Michael Blaize, X-Wind Power chief executive officer.“The communication infrastructure and the quality of people locally were some of the deciding factors in choosing Kent for our business.”

X-Wind prides itself on the quiet operation of its turbines which make suitable for sensitive locations.It is also playing a leading role in renewable energy technology. The company sees strong growth potential for the medium scale wind market, and intends to combine innovative design with robust manufacturing processes.After two years of development, it is currently testing its technology at a smaller 6kW scale before moving to a larger 80kW prototype in 2014.
